China fire: Skyscraper engulfed (=surround / cover / rip through,吞没) in massive flames (=huge/major fire / an enormous fire / sizeable fires(后文有) a blazing/raging inferno(火海) / a (raging) blaze / conflagration,大火的N种表达)

■ engulfed in massive flames

① catch fire (强调动作)

② fire breaks out

③ be aflame(a.)/ablaze(a.)(强调状态)

④ erupt in flames (后文结尾出现)

Massive flames raced up(=move fast up / breaks out at / engulf / rip through,迅速蔓延,是上文「吞没」同义替代) the building's side as smoke billowed out (=jet out / pump out(如排放尾气) / spew out / gush out,气体喷射、喷涌)

火灾/地震 rip/sweep/rage through,表示「席卷」

6.1-magnitude earthquake tore through Sichuan in June.

An enormous fire has engulfed a skyscraper (=high-rise(n.) / high/tall buildings / xx-storey building,摩天大楼,高楼) in the Chinese city of Changsha, state media reports.

footage (=film/video) posted on social media showed (有照片拍到)massive flames racing up the 42-storey building's side as office workersrushed to (=be anxious to do / hurry to do,急着,表达出做某事的迅速)evacuate the building.

■ Footage/Images/Pictures posted/shared on social media showed

● sb is pictured/captured/photographed/videoed/filmed/videotaped doing sth.

● ... are caught on camera.

● sb was caught on camera doing sth

● Footage is shared on Chinese social media showing sb doing

Thick clouds of black smoke billowed out of the structure (=skyscraper,摩天大楼的同义替换), which is a regional office for China Telecom.

China Mobile

China Unicom

China Telecom

MB=Megabyte[ˈmeɡəbaɪt] ,简称megs

GB=Gigabyte[ˈɡɪɡəbaɪt] ,简称gigs

1G=1GB,可以说 1 gigs/gigabytes

100M=100megs,可以说 100 megs/megabytes

Authorities said the flames have since been extinguished (=put out / beat out / choke / crush out / fight down / quench / smother / stamp out / stifle / tread out,扑灭(火)的N种表达) and that no casualties (=killed/injured people / toll(伤亡人数),伤亡人员) had yet been reported.

Images posted on social media showed firefighters aiming jets of water(=streams of water,喷射的水流) at the blackened (=charred / burnt,烧焦的) facade (=front of building,建筑物正面) of the 218m (715ft) tall structure in a race to put the fire out.

■ aiming jets of water at 将股股水流对准...

The room is 12ft × 9ft.

An entire side of the skyscraper appeared to be engulfed in flames at one point (=once,

In another video, dozens of (=a vast amounts of / a body of / a slew of / a host of / a plethora of / scores of / a heap of / a rash of / a pate of / a cascade of / a string of 等,都理解为many,英语中“a n. of”基本都表示“许多many/much”这个意思) people could be seen fleeing (=leave / escape / get away / abandon / abscond / hit and run(事后逃逸),关于「逃跑」的一些拓展) the scene as flaming debris (=wreckage,建筑物残骸) rained down (=drop/fall,落下) from the skyscraper's upper floors (=floors above people,偏上的楼层).

The BBC has not yet been able to verify (=confirm / authenticate / check (out)/(up on) / cross-check(反复核实) / make certain,核实,确认是真的) the footage and it is not currently clear what caused the fire.

According to state media, the building was completed in the year 2000 and is positioned (=placed/built,修) near a major ring road in the city of Changsha, the 10-million person capital of Hunan province, in south-central China.

In a statement reported by AFP news agency, state-owned telecommunications company (电信公司) China Telecom confirmed the incident, saying it was extinguished "by around 16:30 (local time)".

"No casualties have yet been discovered and communications have not been cut off," a company spokesperson said.

Sizeable fires are a common occurrence (=an everyday/a frequent/a regular occurrence / a commonplace / common experience,常事) in China, where earlier this year a huge chemical plant (化工厂) in Shanghai erupted in flames.
