听这首歌曲,不由不使人联想到英国维多利亚时代诗人阿尔弗雷德·丁尼生( Alfred Tennyson) 1883年发表的叙事诗《夏洛特姑娘》。诗歌的背景来源于英格兰英雄传说《亚瑟王和圆桌骑士》中的一个故事:一个城堡主的女儿伊莲对兰斯洛特一见钟情。但兰斯洛特与王后桂妮维亚相爱,伊莲最终郁郁而亡。


丁尼生的《夏洛特姑娘》讲述的是一位叫夏洛特的美丽女子被囚禁在孤岛上的一座塔中的故事:她因受到魔法的诅咒,只能通过镜子的反射看外面的世界,同时要把看到的画面编织到挂毯上。如果脱离镜子看了窗外,她将面临死亡的命运。日复一日,没人知道她的美貌,她的无奈,她早已厌倦了这黑暗死寂般的生活。

镜子瞬间破裂,织机也断裂了,她被丝线缠住。咒语应验了,夏洛特面临着死亡的命运。在挣脱缠绕后她仍毅然乘着船首刻有夏洛特名字的小舟去找兰斯洛特,想见他最后一面。


当小船在少女最后的歌声中慢慢接近恋人的城市,少女的身体也渐渐冰凉,漆黑的双眸再也无法看见心中的他那英俊的面容。


当船载着她冰冷的身体到达卡美洛岸边时,许多卡美洛骑士、贵族们只读懂了她船头刻着的字:夏洛特姑娘。人群中的兰斯洛特对死去的姑娘和她的爱慕也并不知情,只是看着她的面容,叹息道:“你有一张美丽的脸庞,愿上帝的慈悲与你同在,夏洛特女子。”


只因惊鸿一瞥,不顾一切向爱人奔去,承受着致命的诅咒,去追寻无望的爱情。这样的绝恋让人动容。

ON either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,

A bow-shot from her bower-eaves,

To a lady in his shield,
That sparkled on the yellow field, 80

丁尼生的诗歌点亮了许多诗人和画家的艺术灵感。在19世纪末20世纪初的英国,涌现了大量以夏洛特姑娘为题材的作品。处于拉斐尔前派和新古典主义风格之间的英国画家约翰·威廉姆·沃特豪斯1888年所作《夏洛特姑娘》选取了姑娘离岛的情景。


画面中描绘了忧郁的美丽少女,一身白衣,手系铁链,船头折断的水草、熄灭的蜡烛,受难的耶稣,船上铺着华丽的织锦,充满诡异与遐想。


这幅作品集感伤、神秘、疏离、飘逸于一身,有难以表述的空蒙悲凉意象,是沃特豪斯艺术基调的开启之作。后期他的作品具备了诗歌的气质,含蓄雅致,唯美却充满忧伤。


事实上,沃特豪斯以夏洛特姑娘为题总共创作了三幅画作。


另一幅是作于1894年《夏洛特姑娘》


画面选取了夏洛特姑娘从镜子里看到兰斯洛特后急切地起身望向他的片刻。夏洛特奔到窗前去看他,那一瞬间,镜子碎裂,夏洛特被丝线缠住。这意味着诅咒将要降临。


另一幅是作于1916年《夏洛特姑娘说:“我厌倦了自己的影子”》。


夏洛特姑娘看到镜子中的亚斯洛特后,顾影自叹“我已厌倦这虚幻的影踪”。画家捕捉了织机前的女子无心织毯的情景。她面前的挂毯上织的是自己的心上人。
