例文一
Currently, plenty of college students hesitate over
the question: whether they should get employed in a
company or further pursue their studies in a graduate
school upon graduation. From my perspective, the latter is
the better option out of the two because it better ensures a
happy and successful life in the long term.
The following reasons can account for my
choice. On one hand, the competition in the job
market is so intense that it is extremely difficult for an
undergraduate to find a decent job. Probably he lands
a job that he has no interest in, or works at grassroots
level with few promotion opportunities. Even if fortune
smiles upon him, he, who is in his early 20s, may lack
the vision or capability to grasp it. On the other hand, a
postgraduate tends to be more mature physically and
mentally and can see the trajectory of his life more
clearly. Besides, further education can equip him with
more solid and profound knowledge for the future job,
and sharpen his mind and skills to better catch up with
the social trends.
Admittedly, when standing at the crossroads of
graduation, everyone should think twice and make the
decision appropriate to his circumstances, but pursuing
postgraduate study may be preferable for me personally.

When someone commits a criminal act, we always hope the punishment will match the offense. But
when it comes to one of the cruelest crimes—animal fighting—things (26)rarely work out that way. Dog-
fighting victims are (27)tortured and killed for profit and “sport,” yet their criminal abusers often receive a (28)
minimal sentence for causing a lifetime of pain. Roughly half of all federally-convicted animal fighters only get
probation (缓刑).
Some progress has been made in the prosecution (起诉) of animal fighters. But federal judges often
rely heavily on the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines when they (29)determine penalties, and in the case of animal
fighting, those guidelines are outdated and extremely (30)inadequate.
The U.S. Sentencing Commission, which (31)creates these sentencing guidelines, is revisiting them,
proposing to raise the minimum sentence from 6-12 to 21-27 months. This is a step in the right (32)direction,
but we’d like to see the U.S. Sentencing Commission make further changes to the guidelines.
Along with this effort, we’re working with animal advocates and state and federal lawmakers to (33)
strengthen anti-cruelty laws across the country, as well as supporting laws and policies that assist overburdened
animal (34)shelters that care for animal fighting victims. This help is (35)critically important because the high
cost of caring for animal victims is a major factor that prevents people from getting involved in cruelty cases in
the first place.
