China quake: Deadly tremor (=small earthquake) rocks (=shock/startle/stun/astonish/amaze，震惊) Sichuan city in lockdown
At least 21 people have been killed after a 6.6 magnitude earthquake (地震级别 magnitude earthquake，表示“几点几级地震”)hit (=strike，被自然灾害袭击，就可以用hit，核心意思还是影响influence/破坏damage/发生occur in，happen in) southwestern China, state media said.
The quake struck at 13:00 local time (05:00 GMT) in Sichuan province at a depth of 10km (6 miles).
The impact severed (=cut (out/off) / break off / shut off，切断)telecommunications lines (通信线路) and triggered (=bring about/cause/result in/lead to/give rise to，造成，引起) mountain landslides that caused "serious damage", local media reports say.
Some (=about/approximately/roughly，这里some表示“大约”) 21 million people in Sichuan's capital Chengdu were earlier ordered to stay home (=stay indoors / stay at home，居家隔离) because of Covid rules (关于“防疫规定”的清爽译法).
The epicentre (=central point) of the quake (震中) was at Luding, a town in a remote (=outlying/far-flung/distant，偏远的) mountain region located about 226km southwest of Chengdu（距离成都西南方226千米）, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre (中国地震台网中心).
Tremors shook (注意是shake的过去式，别看成shock了) buildings in Chengdu and the neighbouring (=adjacent/adjoining/nearby，邻近的) mega-city of Chongqing, leaving roads blocked (=leave sb/sth adj. / adv. / doing / with.../without...，使...处于某种状态) and cutting telecommunications lines in areas home to (=with/have，“有”的又一种鲜活表达，be home to是某地住着有xx人) more than 10,000 residents, according to broadcaster CCTV.
The shocks also forced some power stations (发电站) to shut down (=be closed) in the areas of Garze (甘孜) and Ya'an, the Chinese broadcaster said.
More than 500 rescue personnel (=rescue crews/rescue workers/rescuers/emergency crews/emergency workers，救援人员，救援队) have been despatched (=dispatch/send/designate/deploy，派遣，派往) to the epicentre, while workers laboured to (=try hard to / manage to do/ struggle to do，费力做，吃力做某事就可用sb labours to do)clear (=eliminate/remove/get rid of/unclog，清除路障，clear我们更倾向于用其形容词，动词也要用起来) roadblocks (清除路障clear roadblocks也就是使交通畅通unclog the traffic，) caused by landslides, according to state broadcaster CGTN.
这里提到了unclog这个动词，本义是“疏通（下水管道），打通”的意思，引申出“打通渠道，保持沟通”等含义，看着可能难登大雅之堂，但在一些正式场合，如国内*讲话的双语文本中，也会使用这个词。
Chengdu residents reported seeing people running out of their high-rise apartments (=high/tall buildings) in a panic after receiving earthquake alerts (=warning) on their phones.
"There were many people who were so terrified (=frightened/scared) they started crying," Laura Luo, an international PR consultant (公关顾问), told news agency Reuters.
When the shaking began, "all the dogs started barking. It was really quite scary".
"Some of my neighbours on the ground floor (一楼，英式英语，美式英语是the first floor) said they felt it very noticeably (=obviously/clearly)," Chen, a resident of Chengdu, told AFP news agency.
"But because Chengdu is currently under epidemic management (静态管理是’Static Management’), people aren't allowed to leave their residential compounds (=stay home/indoors，居家隔离)（residential compounds，是小区的意思，=the neighborhood / the residential area / community / residential community）, so many of them rushed out (=shot from/bustle from/dash out/burst out/dart out/charge out，冲出去) into their courtyards."
Chengdu is the latest city to be locked down by Chinese authorities on Friday, in an attempt to stem the rise (=stifle / prevent / suppress / discourage / strain / limit / inhibit / restrict / throttle / sap / curb / dampen / reduce / crimp / hold back，抑制增长，某种程度上来说，也是一种stop) in Covid cases.
The latest disaster comes (发生我们习惯用happen，以后多用come来替换) months after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake tore through (=(火灾/地震) rip/sweep/rage through / hit，灾难发生不要干巴巴用happen in /come in) Sichuan in June. Sichuan is a earthquake-prone area (=a highly active region for earthquakes / a region where much of the earthquake happens，地震多发的), as it lies(=locate/sit，位于)along the eastern boundary of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.
The latest disaster also called into memory (=bring/call .... to mind / remember / recall / remind you of... ，回想起，回忆起，这里本来是call 地震 into memory，但地震这里太长放到后面去了，变成call into memory 地震) an 8.0-magnitude quake which hit Wenchuan county in northwest Sichuan in 2008, which killed 70,000 and caused widespread destruction (=cause/bring devastation / has left destruction / wreak havoc/destruction/mayhem on，造成破坏，核心意思就是damage).
