Three years ago, I started working at the University of Leeds. Having moved to a new city, I was looking for things to do which would enable me to make some new friends. I noticed that a community school was offering Chinese evening classes. Without much thought, I signed up for a beginner class.
I had no plans to move to China. I just wanted to learn a new language. It was not something I had done before. I was raised to speak fluent English and Spanish. But I think there should be a huge difference between learning a language as a child and learning one as an adult.
There was one lesson a week, each lasting 90 minutes. Mr. Kong, the teacher, was energetic. For each class, he would teach us what seemed like hundreds of new words. After each lesson, I felt as if my brain had been placed in a deep fat fryer(炸锅). Fortunately, after a few months, I got used to this. I began to realize that the more my brain ached after class, the more information I had taken in. Between weekly classes, my mind would reorder and make sense of the chaos(混乱).
The University of Leeds had more than 6,000 international students. Finding Chinese students who would like to practice English in exchange for Chinese was not difficult. My new Chinese friends helped me go over everything I had learned in class.
I think Chinese grammar is easier than that of English or Spanish. But there are so many words and idioms! Nevertheless, I am ready to get over any difficulty and become fluent in Chinese.
28.Why did the author learn Chinese?
A.Because he was planning to teach in China.
B.Because he wanted to make some new friends.
C.Because his new job required Chinese speaking abilities.

29.Which question could best help us find out the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A.Is it lucky for the author to have Mr. Kong as his teacher?
B.Is it really difficult for the author to learn Chinese?
C.Is it very important for the author to learn Chinese?
D.Is it possible for the author to learn Chinese well?
30.Which of the following is not true according to the passage?
A.The author spends one and a half hours taking Chinese lessons a week.
B.The author’s new Chinese friends helped him a lot.
C.The author chose to attend Chinese classes carefully.
D.The author thinks that Chinese is easier than English in grammar.

When 17-year-old Ariella Pacheco of California was still a little girl, her parents let her pick out an American Girl doll(玩偶). She chose one that had the same hair color and style as her.
But what about children with rare(罕见的) medical conditions who don’t look like anyone else? Pacheco wanted to give these children the same gift she got as a child. One day in January 2020, Pacheco read a story about a doll designer(设计者) Amy Jandrisevits. Her “A Doll Like Me” project, created in 2015, made look-alike dolls for children with disabilities(残疾). Pacheco wanted to make similar dolls.
Over the past several months, Pacheco has made cloth dolls for four local kids who have birthmarks(胎记), surgical scars(手术疤痕) and so on. Pacheco asked the kids about their favorite sports and hobbies. She also watched doll-making videos to practice her skills.
After she got her own machine, she learned to make clothes for the dolls. She also designed by herself to recreate the children’s different appearances(相貌).
“I really value(重视) the beauty in little things,” Pacheco said. “Each of these kids is so unique, so special. I hope through these dolls they can see themselves in a new light and really appreciate their beauty.”

Beijing Opera is the most representative of all Chinese traditional dramatic art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from absorbing (吸收) many other dramatic forms, mostly from the local drama ‘Huiban’, which was popular in South China during the 18th century. It is a scenic(戏剧的)art integrating music, performance, literature, aria, and face painting.
Theatrical art forms in many other countries do not present singing, dancing and spoken parts in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on stage; there are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play; in a dance drama, the dancer has no speaking role and does not sing either. Traditional Chinese drama, including Beijing Opera, is a kind of entertainment which includes spoken parts, singing, dancing and acrobatics.
In addition to its presence in China, Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous performers of all time, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will be puzzled all the way through and a little bored from time to time; but you will be charmed and interested. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera even if you know nothing of the dramatic background.” This is how one American traveller described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.
Beijing Opera is China’s national opera and it is full of Chinese cultural traditions. Welcome to China and enjoy Beijing Opera!
34.What does the underlined word “representative” mean in the passage?
A.typical B.proud C.positive D.bright
35.What makes Beijing Opera different from theatrical art forms in many other countries?
A.It has one opera singer on stage.
B.It has one dancer who has no speaking role.
C.It has already spread to many other countries.
D.It includes spoken parts, singing dancing and acrobatics.
36.People think Mei Lanfang played an important role in the spread of Beijing Opera because _______.
A.he made many tours to a foreign country
B.he was a famous Beijing Opera performer
C.he was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners
D.he made Beijing Opera different from other theatrical art forms

“The reason why I chose to be a director was not for shooting films but for Li Huanying,” Jia Ling told The Paper.
Li Huanying, Jia’s mother, passed away when Jia was 19. To express her sadness and regret, Jia decided to make a film named Hi, Mom, which was shown on Feb 12. Based on her personal experiences, the film describes Jia traveling back to the year 1981, when she meets her mother at a young age and tries to improve her mother’s life.
The 39-year-old never imagined that her directorial work would make history. As of Feb 23, it has taken in over 4 billion yuan, according to professional box office tracker Dengta.
Hi, Mom has received many positive reviews. Many moviegoers couldn’t help but run tears for the film’s description of the close relationship between a daughter and her mother.
“Jia’s success comes as a surprise, as the work is special. She puts her love and memories of her deceased (过世的) mother into the film and lets the viewers feel her sincerity (真诚),” Shi Chuan, a chairman of the Shanghai Film Association, told the Global Times.
Indeed, the movie’s sincerity and touching moments make up for its technical features. It has reminded internet users to celebrate and love their mothers. Numbers of photos and texts flooded into weibo with a hashtag photo of my mother when she was young. With the film gaining attraction by word of mouth, the new director “is already China’s most commercially successful female filmmaker ever”, The Hollywood Reporter noted.
