Max Worrell & Jejon Yeung

Chelsea Loft

Located in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City, the organizing design strategy of this renovation was to maintain openness and daylight in the public living zones, while minimizing the amount of partitions to accommodate private rooms for a family with small children.

Occupying a half floor of a classic loft building, historic raw materials of the building such as timber columns and beams, cast iron capitals, and wood joists were left raw and exposed or revealed. Two dark-stained wood storage volumes organize the open public space, and a custom vertically-raked plaster core, complimenting the existing structure, contain the bathrooms and other utility spaces.

Floors and casework throughout are white pigmented wood, and all perimeter walls are white in order to elevate brightness, and to showcase the owner's art collection.
Four Corners Loft

Situated in the landmark Clocktower Building in the Dumbo neighborhood of Brooklyn, the design of this loft capitalizes on the unique 360 degree views of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Two distinct volumes become the visual and organizational hub of the loft, freeing up the perimeter walls to the expansive four exposures of the city skyline beyond.

The volumes are materially similar, yet the scale, texture, and pattern of the white oak panels vary to create subtle differentiation. The reinforced concrete structure of the building is exposed and expressed, creating a contrast with the crisp, new elements throughout.

Ancram Barn

We designed this new storage barn as part of a 30 acre property in Upstate New York. The barn accommodates storage for 2 cars along with a dedicated garden/potting area and a flexible outdoor room that frames dramatic views to the Berkshires beyond. The clean and minimal detailing of the black-stained wood barn establishes a modern counterpart to the other structures on the property while its simple gable form relates to the existing house. Nominated for the 2016-2017 Mies Crowns Americas Prize, MCHAP

NoMad Loft

This 19th century duplex loft located in the historic Gilsey House building in the NoMad neighborhood of Manhattan, was converted from a hotel into apartments in the 1980’s, resulting in oddly shaped entry sequences and constrained living spaces. A threshold volume that contains a mudroom, powder room, and wet bar, was introduced to define a formal arrival experience. The volume, finished in a custom plaster application, allowing existing walls to be removed and spaces to be connected.
