3 Base Camp 大本营

Suddenly a very loud noise made Arlene jump.It was the noise of an avalanche coming down from near the summit of Annapurna. It was before breakfast on the second morning at Base Camp,and Arlene had walked a little way up towards the mountain. Now she was sitting looking down at the tents below. She needed to be alone to think about the climb.She wanted to plan how to get to the top of this mountain. When she heard the avalanche, she again remembered her friend who had died, and she felt very afraid.

On most mountains, avalanches are unusual very early in the morning. On Annapurna, avalanches could happen at any time of the night or day. It was almost impossible to avoid them. Arlene knew that, if they were caught by an avalanche, someone could be killed. Fortunately,this avalanche was too far away from Base Camp to worry the climbers. But perhaps they would not always be so lucky.

Arlene now had to put these worries out of her head, because the really serious work of climbing the mountain was just beginning. Tomorrow Alison Chadwick and Liz Klobusicky would go up to over 5,000 metres to make Camp 1. In the end, there would be five camps at different points on the mountain. Each camp would have a tent and some food. The women would walk between the camps in small teams of two or three, carrying food and equipment. The'summit team’of two or three women would start from Camp 5. This was the safest way of climbing Annapurna. If there was a storm and conditions became too difficult,climbers could come down to a lower camp to find tents and food.

'Woman Leader,’ said Lopsang, when Arlene returned to the camp.'You must not sleep at Camp 2 before the middle of September.We should offer food and drink to the mountain gods before you begin climbing the most dangerous part of the mountain above Camp 2. The middle of September is the best time to go higher.’

Arlene knew that the monsoon rains would finish in the middle of September, and so it was a good idea to wait. For the next two weeks they could carry food and equipment up the mountain to prepare for this dangerous climb above Camp 2. Lopsang helped Arlene to plan the climb carefully. They had to reach the summit during a break between the monsoons and the really bad winter weather, when climbing high would become impossible

Next day there was fine weather and the walking conditions were good. Liz and Alison were happy to be climbing the mountain at last, and they left Base Camp early to try to establish Camp 1 on the mountain.Before they went, they spoke to the women who were making the film.

Liz,a young American climber who worked as a schoolteacher in Germany,said:'This is a great opportunity for women mountaineers.’

'The really difficult part has not yet begun,’said Alison. 'We will need to be both brave and strong as we go higher up this mountain.’

It seemed a long, long wait for the others at Base Camp below.Finally,after some hours, they heard a voice coming from the radio. It was Liz Klobusicky.'This is Liz and Alison at Camp 1.Repeat we are at Camp1.It took us four and a half hours, and the walk is not too difficult. The Camp was established at 2:30 p.m.on August 28th.’Everyone at Base Camp cheered.The first step on the mountain had been taken.
