英语中真正起到交流作用的声音不是单个的音素，正真起到交流作用的是48个音素按照一定的韵律的组合。音素组合成音节，音节构成单词，单词构成语流，语流才是真正起到交流作用的语音单位。

从一个重读音节过度到下一个重读音节构成了一个起伏周期，这种周期性的起伏就构成了语流小节。每个单词都有其重读音节,有的单词甚至还有多个重读音节,但是在实际语流中,一般介词、冠词、连词、非强调或指代明显的代词和其它语法功能词的重读音节都不重读。

（十拍）In other words, you should not think too much about some future event before it really happens.

（十四拍）This means you should not put all of your resources together in one place because you could risk losing everything at one time.
