Howard Pyle is born in 1853 in Wilmington, America. When he is young he likes to read adventure stories. He is also very good at drawing. When he is older he goes to art school in New York. He studies there and starts to sell his work to magazines. By 1880, he is a success.1853年，霍华德·派尔出生于美国威尔明顿。他年轻时喜欢读冒险故事。他也很擅长画画。当他长大后，他去纽约上艺术学校。他在那里学习，并开始向杂志出售他的作品。到了1880年，他成功了。
In 1881,Howard marries Anne Pool and they have seven children. Howard works as an illustrator and helps other people to write their books. He becomes famous and he writes books too. Two of his best-known books are The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood and The Story of King Arthur and His Knights. Both books are very successful. He draws all of the illustrations inside them. Some people think these are his best illustrations.In 1889,his son dies. Howard writes a book called The Garden Behind the Moon after his death. In 1900, Howard opens his own art school in Wilmington. Many famous illustrators go to the school. Howard works there but never takes any money. In 1910, Howard takes his family to ltaly. The Story of King Arthur and His Knights first appears in 1903. The story begins when Arthur is born. The sorcerer Merlin tells Arthur’s father-King Uther Pendragon - that dark and dangerous times are coming. King Uther Pendragon's enemies want to kill Arthur. Uther Pendragon gives Arthur to Merlin and Merlin hides Arthur. Time passes. King Uther Pendragon dies. Arthur grows up with another family. He does not know that his father is King Uther Pendragon. Then one day, Arthur pulls a sword from a stone.Only the true King of Britain can do this. In the story of King Arthur, there are many famous people and things. There is the sword, Excalibur. There is Merlin the sorcerer and the evil sorceress Morgana Le Fay. There is Lady Guinevere and Arthur's wedding to her. There is also Sir Lancelot and the Knights of the Round Table.Arthur makes manyenemies but also many friends. One of the themes in the book is change. Near the end of the book Arthur has a dream.In the dream he sees a large wheel.He is on the wheel. lt is turning slowly. At first, Arthur is in the light. But the wheel continues to turn; and soon, he is in darkness.
