It’s important to learn how we can protect the environment. Here are 5R rules for us.

Reduce If you want to reduce waste, you should use things more cleverly. A large number of trees are being cut down to make paper. If everyone uses paper carelessly, soon we would not have any trees left. Other things are also being wasted, and people don’t know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary to reduce the amount of waste we produce.

Reuse You should always think of reusing things before throwing them out. For example, give the clothes you do not use or the ones that are too small to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.

Recycle Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By doing so we save lots of time and money. For example, coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat and melted. The metal can be used to make new coke cans.

Recover When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐烂的) ones. You have two choices: one is to throw the apples away; the second is to throw the rotten ones and keep the good ones. In this way, you are recovering the eatable parts of food.

Repair If one of the legs of your table is broken, you should repair it. If you want to buy something newer and better, it is better for you to sell the old thing, or give it to people who can use it after repairing it

Learn the rules to protect our environment. Let’s try our best to make the earth cleaner and more beautiful.

Usually when we consider Thai movies ,we think of kungfu flicks and horror films. But in recent years the Thai films which have impressed young Chinese audiences are those which we call “pure and fresh” romantic films. For example, movies about love: the sad and beautiful The Love of Siam ; the funny and encouraging Season Change; the naive and sweet My Girl.

These films have something in common: the story lines are simple; some actors have a great sense of humor; the films are sometimes too long; and the main characters are quite good-looking which is an attraction for cinema-viewers. For example, if you look at the posters for Crazy Little Thing Called Love, your eyes will shine for the beauty of the actors and actresses.

Yet how could such simple stories be so popular? Thai director Komgrit Triwimol who directed Season Change and My Girl once said: “The magic of Thai films lies in the way they tell a story. You already know the ending, but you want to know what happens next.”

When someone says, “Well, I guess I'll have to go to face the music,” it doesn’t mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant, like being called in your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this or that. At some time or another, every one of us has had to “face the music”, especially as children. We can remember father’s angry voice: “I want to talk to you!” And only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase “face the music” is known to every American, old and young. It is at least one hundred years old. Where did the expression come from?

The first explanation came from the American novelist James Fenimore Cooper. He said, in 1851, that expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage. After they got their clue(暗示) to go on , they often said, “It’s time to go to face the music’’ And that is exactly what they did face the orchestra which was just below the stage. An actor might be frightened or nervous as he moved on to the stage in front of the audience that might be friendly, or perhaps unfriendly, especially if he forgot his lines. But he had to go out. If he did not, there would be no play. So “face the music” came to mean: having to go through something, no matter how unpleasant the experience might be, because you knew you had no choice.

1.The expression “face the music” means ______.

A. plan to go to a concert B. get one’s clue to do something

Two children stood outside the door with old coats. "Any old papers, lady?" asked one of them.

I was busy. I wanted to say no, but I saw that their shoes had holes in them and they were wet. "Come in and I'll make you a cup of hot tea." They came in, saying nothing. Their shoes left prints on the floor.

I gave them tea and bread to protect (防止) them from the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started my housework again.

The silence in the living room surprised me. I looked in.

The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it. The boy asked me in a low voice, "Lady, are you rich?"

Am I rich? Oh, no! I looked at the old things in my room.

The girl put her cup back in its saucer (茶碟) carefully and said, "Your cups match your saucers."

Then they left, holding their papers against the wind. They hadn't said thank you. They didn't need to. They had done more than that. They had reminded me that I had so much to thank for. The blue cups and saucers were simple, but they matched. The potatoes and meat before me, a roof over my head, my husband with a job—these things matched, too.

I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The prints of their small shoes were still wet on my floor. I let them be. I wanted them there to remind me how rich I was.

One day, a raven(渡鸦)happened to fly past a lake. Looking at the lake, he saw the most beautiful animal he had ever seen. It was a swan and its feathers were as white as snow. The swan was playing with other birds happily, talking and dancing. And it seemed that the other birds all liked to stay with it . When he looked at his own feathers, they were as black as coal. The raven was very angry with the swan. “How can the swan have such wonderful feathers?” said the raven. What should he do with his feathers? He thought it over and over.

Then, the raven decided that he also wanted to have white feathers like the swan’s. From that day on, the raven began to live like the swan. He moved his home from the woods to the lake. He also started to eat water plants like the swan. He tried his best to talk and dance with the other birds. The most important was that each day, the raven would wash his feathers, hoping that they would turn white. Even he went to the nearby rivers and ponds to wash his feathers because he thought the water in the lakes was not enough for him to wash them. Are you carrying too much on your back at school? You're not alone. Back experts in the United States are worried that young students are having back and neck problems as a result of carrying too much in their backpacks (schoolbags).

"It hurts my back when I run," said Oberlin Reyes, a student in Virginia. "It's hard to get up the stairs with my backpack, because it's too heavy."

Oberlin is among students whose backpacks were weighed for a week in a recent study.

They had regular backpacks with two straps (带子) to carry them, but a number of students with heavy loads had switched to rolling backpacks (which have wheels and can roll on the ground). Shirley Park, whose backpack weighed 10 kilograms, said she changed to a rolling backpack because she was starting to have back pain. How much is too much? Experts say students should carry no more than 10 to 15 percent of their own body weight.

A few students had one suggestion to lighten the load: less homework.

P.S. Doctor's suggestion:

① Lighten the load. Clean out binders (活页材料) and take home only the books you need that night.

②Wide straps are better. They send out the weight over your shoulders more evenly (均匀). And be sure to wear both straps rather than hanging the pack over one shoulder.

③Pack smart. The heavier things should be packed closed to the back

④Bend both knees when you pick up the pack, and don't just bend over at the waist.
